How to choose hotel towels: weight, size and material explained

Choosing towels comes down to three things: size sets the use, weight sets thickness and laundry cost, and material sets feel and durability. Write these three clearly, and quotes from different suppliers can be compared side by side.

Short answer

  • Choose size by use first: bath towels, hand towels, face towels and bath mats all differ. Names vary from place to place, so writing the size in your inquiry is safest.
  • Then choose weight by tier: bath towels at 400–500 GSM for economy, 500–600 GSM for most city hotels and 600–700 GSM for upscale; bath mats are usually 700 GSM or more.
  • 100% cotton is the first choice; for better wash durability and lower cost, use a cotton-polyester blend.
  • Your inquiry should state size, weight (per square meter or per piece), material, color, logo and quantity.

01Four towels: uses and specifications

NamesUseCommon size (cm)Common weight
Bath TowelFor drying off after bathing; the largest size and the highest usage70 × 140 / 80 × 160 / 90 × 180400–700 GSM
Hand TowelBy the sink for drying hands; guests often use it on their face too30 × 50 / 35 × 55400–600 GSM
Face TowelA small square for washing the face or removing makeup; some hotels don't provide it30 × 30 / 32 × 32 / 35 × 35400–600 GSM
Bath MatLaid outside the shower to dry wet feet50 × 80 / 60 × 90700–1,000 GSM

These are the common specifications in our product range; other sizes can be made to your hotel standard. Some quotes call the hand towel a face towel and the small square a washcloth, so always write the size after the name.

02How to choose the weight

GSM is the weight of towel per square meter. The higher the GSM, the thicker and more absorbent the towel, but washing and drying take longer and cost more in water and power, and each linen cart holds fewer.

TierBath towel weightFeatures
Economy400–500 GSMLighter and faster drying, with lower laundry costs, suited to hotels with fast turnover
Most city hotels500–600 GSMA good balance of thickness and absorbency
Upscale hotels & resorts600–700 GSMSubstantial feel; the laundry must be able to keep up with drying

Bath mats take foot traffic and need to absorb water quickly, so they're usually heavier than bath towels, commonly 700–1,000 GSM.

03Converting GSM to piece weight

Inquiries often say "bath towel 600g", which could mean weight per square meter or weight per piece, and the two can differ a lot. Convert like this:

Piece weight (g) ≈ GSM × length (m) × width (m)

SpecificationWeightApprox. weight per piece
Bath towel 70 × 140 cm500 GSMAbout 490 g
Bath towel 70 × 140 cm600 GSMAbout 590 g
Bath towel 80 × 160 cm600 GSMAbout 770 g
Bath mat 50 × 80 cm800 GSMAbout 320 g

Finished weight varies slightly; we recommend stating the allowed range when ordering, commonly ±5%. When we receive an inquiry, we first confirm which weight is meant, then quote.

04How to choose the material

MaterialFeaturesSuited to
100% CottonAbsorbent and soft; the most common choiceMost hotels
Combed cottonShort fibers are removed in spinning, so loops are neater and shed less, at a slightly higher priceMidscale hotels and above
Long-Staple CottonLonger fibers and a finer feel, at noticeably higher costUpscale hotels & resorts
Cotton-polyester blendMore durable in the wash, faster drying and lower cost, but less absorbent and soft than 100% cottonHotels with tight budgets and frequent laundering

05Color & logo

  • White is most common: it can be bleached and sanitized, and color matching isn't a worry when restocking.
  • Colored towels: check colorfastness to avoid fading or bleeding after washing; custom colors also raise the MOQ.
  • Dobby borders and jacquard: a smooth woven border at both ends is a common hotel towel style; jacquard can weave the logo straight into the border.
  • Embroidered logos: lower MOQ than jacquard, suited to hotels ordering smaller quantities.

06Common mistakes

  • Writing only "bath towel 600g" without saying per square meter or per piece, so the quotes are really for different specifications.
  • Comparing only unit price, not weight and size.
  • Upscale hotels choosing towels too heavy for the laundry to dry in time, so turnover can't keep up.
  • Hand towels and face towels mixed up, so the delivered size isn't what you expected.
